![]() This craggy coastline is where Punta Brava will be built. But Tiger Woods is already one of the hottest names in golf course architecture. The Cypress native recently announced his brand’s third project — Punta Brava, a private golf and ocean club on a 7-mile peninsula near Ensenada, Mexico, about 65 miles south of San Diego. The property is slated to open in 2011. Woods took full advantage of his first oceanfront tract, allowing for stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Bay of Todos Santos on every hole. “We tried to incorporate the viewscapes and rock formations to make sure that you felt like you were part of this amazing peninsula the entire time you play,” Woods said. “That was a challenge and one of the reasons why it took us just over 20 routings or so to finally get it right, and I think we got it right.” With layouts in the works in Dubai and North Carolina, Woods is excited to be involved in a project near his hometown. “I think this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “I grew up here in SoCal and I’ve been down to Mexico many times, and to do something so close to my house and where I grew up is pretty special for me.” The addition of Woods’ name has become a big selling point in the high-end market. That’s reflected in the exuberance of Red McCombs, co-founder of Punta Brava’s developer, the Flagship Group. “When this was brought to me, I wasn’t especially turned on,” said McCombs, who used to own the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. “Then they told me there was a good chance Tiger would be involved. I said, ‘Forget it. It’s over. I’m in.’” Woods, who’s passed on “quite a few” course design opportunities, has said he doesn’t intend on overburdening himself with architecture. He also wanted to gain playing experience worldwide before jumping into the business. Just like his tournament preparation, he’s taking on this part-time role on with care, intelligence and passion. It remains to be seen how Woods will fare when he returns from knee surgery, but it’s not surprising that he already has the Midas touch with golf course design. |
