Tustin Ranch continues to provide a country club experience for the daily-fee golfer Golf is full of cliches and catchphrases. When it comes to courses, the words "public golf" and "country club experience" are getting combined a lot in sentences and testimonials. If your pocketbook can't afford to keep experimenting at courses that make such claims, consider playing a round at Tustin Ranch. It's an excellent place for players to splurge if they're looking for a good return on their golfing dollar. THE COURSE Stretching from 6,064 to 6,803 yards, Tustin Ranch provides golfers a challenge - or a chance to shoot a career round. The fairways are generally wide and the greens are undulated. Architect Ted Robinson also has sprinkled in a number of his trademark water features. The layout flows naturally through suburbia in much the same way a park fits into a neighborhood, and the experience is enhanced by the club's caddie program. AROUND THE GREEN Fair and forgiving off the tee, the tricky aspect to Tustin Ranch is the putting surfaces. Tiers and ridges on the greens force players to hit the ball to the right level to avoid slippery putts up or down steep slopes. The fifth hole is a good example. At 318 yards, it's a short par 4, and everyone in our group drove it in the swale in front of the green. We probably could have hit a shag bag full of balls and not gotten one to stop near the back-left pin location. ALL WET As with many Robinson-designed courses, the water features make Tustin Ranch memorable. Water in front of the 492-yard, par-5 second hole will test all approach shots, whether you go for the green in two or not. A large lake that fronts the ninth and 18th greens also demands your attention. A fountain, waterfalls and colorful flowers surrounding the 160-yard, par-3 11th hole make it one of the best short holes in the region. It's also one of the first sights you'll see after turning onto the road that leads to the clubhouse. LOCATION & RATES Tustin Ranch Golf Club is at 12442 Tustin Ranch Road in Tustin.
