Reverse a bad habit

Stretching exercises can help you stay in the swing and finish strong.

A reverse C finish is a common swing flaw that can cause multiple injuries. It’s characterized by the hips leaning forward toward the target and the upper body leaning back toward the trailing leg at the end of the swing.

Golfers with tightness in the chest, hip flexor and trail leg — coupled with weak glutes — often can’t make a proper coil through the backswing. A lack of flexibility and core strength also causes golfers to hang back and overarch their lower back to finish the shot.

Here are some of the signs and symptoms, followed by exercises to help you swing with greater ease.

SIGNS
• Tight right hip flexor (for right-handed golfers)
• Tight chest
• Weak core
• Weak glutes

SYMPTOMS
• Low back pain
• SI (sacroiliac) irritation

HIP FLEXOR STRETCH
This stretch helps reduce excessive lumbar arching.
1. Start in a half kneel position, with one leg on the floor and the other in a 90-degree bent position.
2. Place a golf club vertically behind your spine and tilt your pelvis so that your entire spine runs along the club shaft.
3. Lean your hip forward into the stretch, keeping your spine against the club.
4. Hold for 60 seconds and repeat 2-3 times on each leg.

SIDE PLANK
This is a great exercise to build trunk and core stability.
1. Lie on your left side with your feet on top of each other and your left elbow directly under your left shoulder.
2. Slowly lift your hips until your spine makes a straight plank. Make sure you elevate high enough to get your calves off the ground.
3. Hold for 20 seconds and return to the ground. Increase time increments to 60 seconds when strong enough.
4. Repeat on the right side.
