Calvin Peete has always been a straight shooter, both on and of the golf course. One of the most accurate drivers in the history of the PGA Tour talks about some of the keys to his practice. Glenn: As you prepare for a tournament, what do you work on? Calvin: Timing and balance. I think that's the key to anybody's game. Also, I try not to have tension in my swing. Timing means you're controlling the speed of the clubhead, and it's not controlling you. Each player has to learn that individually. Glenn: You mentioned balance. Calvin: Yes. When practicing, I never come out of the golf swing until the ball hits the ground. By holding my finish, I'm teaching myself muscle memory so the brain will know exactly what I should be doing and what position I need to finish in. By holding the finish you can feel your balance. You can't feel that if you quickly come out of your finish. Glenn: Are you still learning about the game of golf? Calvin: Oh, yes. There are many things I will never know. I've learned from my peers - Chi Chi, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus. I remember someone saying that Ben Hogan said, "You can learn the basics in six months, but you'll spend a lifetime learning the game." I am still learning, and it's fun. n Glenn Monday is a Los Angeles-based teaching professional and author of "Know Your Swing." He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
