This year’s third annual edition of the tournament offers more of the same for juniors and their families — the chance to enjoy some of the finest courses in Orange County over multiple days, with a tour-like atmosphere to boot. Held at six courses — Aliso Creek, Black Gold, Strawberry Farms, Coyote Hills, Monarch Beach and Tustin Ranch — the OC Junior Golf Championship is one of the few events to require that all competitors use a caddie. Plus, players are announced at the first tee, just like at a tour event. The 54-hole tournament begins with pre-tournament registration and a barbecue dinner at Tustin Ranch on Friday, December 18. Two qualifying rounds (18 total holes for boys and girls age 11-and-under, 36 total holes for the five other divisions) will be held the weekend of December 19-20, and the top qualifiers from all seven groupings will compete at Tustin Ranch on Monday, December 21. The fact that this year’s event has been moved toward the end of December should accommodate more juniors who are out of school, as well as parents potentially serving as caddies. More than 75 juniors from around the Southland have already registered, a number that should increase to well over 100 by the time the tournament begins. Among those who have already entered are San Juan Capistrano’s Rito Armenta, who won the Boys 16-18 division last year, and Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills, a past winner at the Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego. “We’re just looking forward to putting together another fun event,” said Steve Plummer, founder of the OC Golf Coast Foundation. Net proceeds from the OC Junior Golf Championship go to the Foundation, whose primary aim is to increase golf awareness and access among children in secondary schools. Select hotels from around Orange County, including the Anaheim Hilton and the Newport Beach Fairmont, have created special rate packages for family members and guests of competitors hailing from outside the region. All participating juniors will receive a gift bag that includes a Cleveland Golf hat, a Callaway Golf divot tool, one dozen Srixon golf balls, and a gift card valid at Roger Dunn Golf Shops and Golf Mart locations. Registration is open until Monday, December 7.
