UCLA Men’s Golf Coach Derek Freeman has announced the signing of two local junior golfers who will play for the Bruins men’s golf team in 2010. Anton Arboleda (La Cañada High School) and Patrick Cantlay (Servite High School), both 17, are ranked among the nation’s top 50 prep amateurs and are veterans of the junior circuit. “We’re very pleased to sign Patrick and Anton,” said Freeman, who began his third season at UCLA in September. “Both are experienced junior players who have participated in tournaments all over the country. Each has been successful on the junior circuit.” Arboleda, ranked 42nd nationally by the American Junior Golf Association, placed second in stroke-play competition at the 2009 U.S. Boys Junior with scores of 68-72—140 (-2) in June at Bedminster, NJ. He later advanced to the second round of match play. Since April on the AJGA circuit, he’s recorded five top-20 finishes in eight starts, highlighted by a tie for second at the Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Championship. He also tied for 13th at the Heather Farr Classic and most recently, tied for 15th at The PING Invitational at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Cantlay, a Los Alamitos resident ranked sixth by the AJGA, is a two-time First-Team AJGA All-American. He tied for 19th in stroke play at the 2009 U.S. Boys Junior at 147 (+3) before advancing to the second round of match play. He also qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club. On the AJGA circuit, he’s recorded four top-10 results in nine starts in the last 12 months. He was the runner-up in the ’09 Western Junior Championship and also tied for third at the Thunderbird Invitational at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., in May. Most recently, he tied for fifth at The PING Invitational. “The signing of these two outstanding young men demonstrates the importance of bringing the best players from California to UCLA,” Freeman continued. “Both Patrick and Anton had a lot of college options athletically and academically. We’re very excited that they chose to become Bruins.” ALSO SEE: Plenty of locals among 2009 AJGA All-Americans |
