Long Beach native Paul Goydos has never played in the Ryder Cup, but whether or not he qualifies for the U.S. team this year, he’ll be part of the competition. On Wednesday at Riviera Country Club, U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin named Goydos one of his four assistants for the biennial competitions, along with 2006 U.S. captain Tom Lehman, former PGA Tour member and current Champions Tour regular Jeff Sluman and 20-time PGA Tour winner Davis Love III. Pavin, a Ventura native and former standout on the UCLA men’s golf team, was on hand to talk with the media prior to playing in the Northern Trust Open. The 50-year-old is splitting his time between the PGA and Champions tours this season —after tying for 52nd at the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii last month, he finished tied for 13th at the Champions Tour’s Mitsubishi Electric Championship in nearby Hualalai a week later. Pavin has confirmed he’ll be teeing it up in March’s Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club, the only Champions Tour event scheduled in Southern California this year. Goydos, a 45-year-old who’s been a touring professional for 20 years, has garnered two wins and more than $10 million in his PGA Tour career. He’s made the cut in two of his first three events this season, with his best finish a tie for 39th at the Sony Open. The Ryder Cup matches between the U.S. and Europe will be held October 1-3 at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales. ALSO SEE: Pavin named Ryder Cup captain One on One with Paul Goydos |
