A new golf mini-tour focusing on Southland courses is taking shape this year. West Coast Golf Tour founder J.P. Brown and co-director Jonathan Green are excited about the debut of the organization’s first winter season. The pair have played on mini-tours as recently as 2009 and are confident that their venture will catch on because of their expertise and the top-quality competition and courses involved. “Most [golf tours] are run by guys who have at some point been involved with playing them,” said Green, who played golf at Oregon State and operates a golf academy in Oregon. “But J.P. and I are so recent to [playing] other tours that we know how they operate as well as knowing many of the guys who will be competing on ours. So we know what they’re looking for in a professional tour and where they really want to play.” The first two events were held in January at Oak Creek Golf Club and CrossCreek Golf Club. Events this month will be held at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club (February 2), the Country Club at Soboba Springs (February 16-17) and Talega Golf Club (February 23-24), with a tournament at Oak Valley Golf Club (March 8-9) preceding the Winter Series Championship at Carlton Oaks Golf Course (March 25-26). The membership fee has been waived for the winter series with entry fees of $250 and $500 for 18-hole and 36-hole tournaments, respectively. Winter Series tournaments are 18 and 36 holes, and 54-hole events will be added in the future. Finishers in the top third of the field earn a share of the purse, which is dictated by field size. “A very high majority of our players are guys who are one to three years out of college,” said Green, who added that he’d like to find sponsors for a spring season. “The fields will be full of excellent golfers.” For more information, visit wc-tour.com. |
