Summer Golf Classic will expand players’ horizons
The inaugural Southland Golf Summer Golf Classic will be held Monday, August 18 at Hacienda Golf Club, a gorgeous old-school course designed in 1920 by Willie Watson.

“This is one of the best private clubs in Southern California, and while it will be a fun-filled day with great prizes, we think the real selling point is the opportunity for non-members to play this great golf course,” said Rob Lyon, co-founder of Southland Golf magazine, which is presenting the event.

The outing is not a competitive event, although prizes will be given out for various games and contests.

“It’s really a chance to come out, have a fun round of golf at a stellar course and maybe walk away with a few prizes,” Lyon said. “Southland Golf magazine is very committed to branching out into golf tournaments and other events. And offering local golfers the chance to enjoy a track like this at such an affordable price is one way we can help grow golf in the community.”

Registration is $150, and everyone who enters will receive a $50 gift card to Roger Dunn Golf Shops. Other prizes will include Callaway watches, free rounds of golf at premier Orange County courses, Aldila golf shafts and other items.
Along with Aldila, Roger Dunn and Southland Golf, event sponsors include 710 ESPN radio, Golf Buddy and Adams Golf.

The $150 registration fee also includes a boxed lunch, post-round appetizers, range balls and the use of a cart.
Hacienda Golf Club, located in the hills of La Habra Heights, has a tree-lined layout that underwent a major remodeling in 2005. John Harbottle, a Pete Dye protégé whose résumé includes refurbishments at Big Canyon, Hillcrest and Virginia Country Club, installed new green complexes, longer tees and bunker modifications that enhance the original design.

“Our event is destined to become one of the best city championships in Southern California,” Youpa added. “Thanks to Mike King, former president of the men’s club who is spearheading this tournament, and thanks to the city. This year is the first of what will be an annual event.”

The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will be held on Industry Hills’ two layouts: the par-72 Dwight D. Eisenhower and the par-71 Babe Didrikson Zaharias courses. With five tournaments in the books, the Birdie Click Tour will take a big step this month with its sixth event.
The Mile Square Open, which will be held Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, marks the first multi-day event in the tour’s inaugural season.

“The players just keep demanding more, and we’re going to keep giving it to them so we can continue to grow,” said Birdie Click Tour founder Aldo Sarmiento.

The 36-hole event at Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Golf Course will be held on the Classic Course on Saturday and the Players Course on Sunday. Entry fee is $160, and the top prize has been increased to $415 in scrip at Roger Dunn Golf Shops.

Junior World returNing to San Diego area venues
The Junior World Golf Champion-ships return to San Diego area courses this month. Youngsters from nine groupings will compete on six courses from July 15-18:
• The boys 15-17 division is again competing on the South Course at Torrey Pines, only four weeks after the U.S. Open was staged there.
• Since the North Course at Torrey Pines won’t be able to stage a full 18 holes until at least next month, the girls 15-17 division moves to Santee’s Carlton Oaks Country Club.
• Competitors to watch include Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, who finished second in the 15-17 group last year and Japan’s Issei Tanabe, who has won the boys 6-and-under and 7-8 divisions and now moves to the 9-10 group.
