Sierra Star Golf Course is a top destination in Mammoth Lakes.

By Michelle FloresPublished: July, 2008

Tree-lined fairways and mountain views are prevalent at Sierra Star.
You’d think that at 8,000 feet above sea level and with forest-lined fairways and panoramic mountain views, Sierra Star Golf Course in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., would rank in the top five of anyone’s must-play-this-summer list.

But somehow, the Cal Olson-designed track has managed to slip under the radar of many Southland golfers, even though Sierra Star has been open nine years.

“It’s really a hidden jewel,” said Dave Schacht, PGA head pro and director of golf for the Mammoth Resort facility.
Mammoth Resort’s seasonal “Stay & Golf” package provides the perfect incentive to add Sierra Star to your short list of golf junkets. But this fact may very well seal the deal for those who need more motivation: the thinner air at this elevation means you’ll have a chance to hit some of your longest drives ever.

Even if you don’t smash it 350 yards off the tee, you can’t beat the “true golf” experience that Sierra Star offers.
“The course is lined with trees, making each hole its own golf experience,” he said. “You have 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and the Mammoth Mountain ski area. When you take the time to catch your breath and enjoy the views, you realize how stunning it all is.”

Sierra Star is characterized by narrow fairways, elevated tees and multi-tiered, undulating greens. The abundance of trees requires accuracy off the tee; nevertheless, it’s easy to find errant balls because areas under the trees are kept free of brush.
Several streams, a large lake and strategic bunkers provide numerous challenges. Dealing with club selection at the high altitude will further test your skills.

Off the course, an abundance of recreational activities and attractions await. Fishing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding are just a few outdoor adventures that can be enjoyed inside a visually stunning habitat brimming with snowcapped peaks, red firs, Jeffrey pine trees and wildflowers.

In Mammoth Village, you’ll find a kid-friendly Adventure Center, retail stores and boutiques, restaurants, and an event plaza offering live music, a petting zoo, a gondola ride and a giant trampoline.

The “Stay & Golf” package starts at $140 and includes lodging and one round per person per day. Lodging choices include: Juniper Springs Resort, located a short walk from the course; The Village Lodging, located in the dining and entertainment district; and Mammoth Mountain Inn, located on the mountain at 9,000 feet and next to the Adventure Center.

“As far as our course conditions and guest services, give us a try once and you’ll be hooked for life,” Schacht said.
Sierra Star will be open through October 12, weather permitting.
